Childhood, Poetry

No place to play

A bird placed in a cage
grows accustomed: a narrow stage.
Gradually, by degrees
learns to love, learns to please

the hand that feeds the seeds
of its own undoing. Choosing
to care for its needs
instead of the soul it’s losing.

Defeat is in the eyes
of everyone born to roam.
We no longer look to the skies,
though this cage is not our home.
