Back words

Everything backwards.

I’ll do everything backwards.

I’ll wait until I’m bitter, broken, emotionally dead,
Before I try to fall in love.
I’ll wait until I’m old, frail, barely able to walk
before I try to see the world,

I’ll wait until my children are dulled by years of homework, tests, exams
Before I dare to let them imagine,
I’ll wait until the someone else says something, does something, survives,
Before I speak up for the oppressed,

I’ll wait until the earth dies, sick, poisoned, exploited,
Before I stop drinking bottled water,
I’ll wait until my body falls apart from junk food, abuse, inactivity
before I start to count the days left,

I’ll wait until tomorrow, next time, another day,
Before I realise it’s too late.

I’ll wait until…

I’ll wait until I stop saying “I’ll wait until”.

Before tomorrow, next time, another day,
I’ll realise it’s too late,
Before my body falls apart from junk food, abuse, inactivity,
I’ll start to count the days left,

Before the earth dies, sick, poisoned, exploited,
I’ll stop drinking bottled water,
Before someone else says something, does something, survives,
I’ll speak up for the oppressed,

Before my children are dulled by years of homework, tests, exams,
I’ll dare to let them imagine,
Before I’m old, frail, barely able to walk,
I’ll try to see the world,

Before I’m bitter, broken, emotionally dead,
I’ll try to fall in love.

My words, I’ll take them back.

– a piece I wrote back in 2014
